History

The unique town North Hollywood has been home to a myriad of events and influential people in the history and development of the Southern half of the Valley prior to it’s revitalization as the NoHo Arts District you have now come to love.

North Hollywood is the birthplace of California statehood. American history was forever changed in January, 1847, when Lt. Col. John C. Fremont of the United States and General Andres Pico of Mexico met at the Campo de Cahuenga ("Cahuenga Field"), signed the treaty that was to end the war between their two countries and spark the beginning for California.

In 1890, North Hollywood was established as the town of Lankershim, by Wilson C. Weddington. The vision, hard work and perseverance of the Weddington’s and ten other pioneer families is what enabled the town to grow and prosper.

The future NoHo Arts District was home to the Lankershim Land Ranch and Water Company, a General Store, Post Office (now the entrance to the new MTA subway) and the J. M. Bonner Fruit Shipping Plant, a major supplier of fruit to the eastern United States.

In 1927, as the ranches and orchards were giving way to business and residential development, voters approved a bond issue for Lankershim Park. A few years later its name was changed to North Hollywood.

Over the next 80 years North Hollywood moved from cattle and sheep to wheat fields and fruit orchards to a rapidly growing post-war suburbia boom of the Valley.

In 1975 the Citizen Advisory Committee formulated a 20-year community Master Plan that. That led to heart of the redevelopment program in the 1980’s, for the first project of its kind in the San Fernando Valley. The Chamber became the Universal City/North Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in 1985.

Today, the NoHo Arts District is growing rapidly. We have a new North Hollywood police station and plans for much more growth including two new large venues that expand upon existing theatres. An exciting new mixed-use development, the NoHo Commons, is planned near the NoHo Arts District's commercial core and subway station by the J.H. Snyder Company.

Without question, Universal City and North Hollywood have not only advanced dramatically in the last century, but are also poised for unprecedented growth as the area redefines itself as a major business, residential, and arts district at the crossroads of the Southern California lifestyle.
